Wet Hay

We are re-posting an email we received from OSU Extension about what to do with your wet hay, as there was quite a bit of it this year due to all the rain. Hopefully you can find this helpful!

OSU Extension:
We have a lot of wet hay bales out there and need to find some solutions for using it. First we need to determine if it is safe to store and use. If the hay is unusable as feed, we need to dispose of it. Let?s explore these ideas.

Forestry

We had a question about resources for info on managing forested lands in Oregon the other day and found an excellent resource for this at the OSU Forestry Extension website - http://extensionweb.forestry.oregonstate.edu/ . Here there is a ton of info on forest health, wildlife, thinning, fire, etc., as well as a way to contact your local extension forester if you have further questions. Check it out!

Hay Resource

With the hay season coming soon, we thought we would share a good Oregon resource the Oregon Hay & Forage Growers Association. They provide hay reports as well as resources for weather and hay testing.

Online Farm Mapping

We found a good free online tool for beginning farm mapping to help beginning farmers, as well as a video on how to use it! Check out: http://www.beginningfarmers.org/free-online-tool-for-farm-mapping/

Farm Stay US

At the OSU Small Farms Conference in February, a representative from Farm Stay US gave a presentation on how to add value to your small farm. It was a great presentation as they are very knowledgeable about how to begin one and can help you to learn how to start one. Contact them through: http://www.farmstayus.com/.

Soil & Water Conservation Districts

A good place to start your networking search is at your local Soil & Water Conservation District. Every county in the USA has one, which can point you to different resources for agricultural and conservation practices. Start by searching for your district on the National Association of Conservation Districts website at: http://nacdnet.org/.

Networking

We are interested in helping landowners find the information they need to address their land issues or learn new techniques for production and/or conservation practices. We will start posting different resources on this blog as well as ways to network with other landowners, including finding mentors. Contact us if you have questions or would like more information on a specific topic!
